From March the 16th 2023, holders of driving licences issued by the UK authorities who are currently resident in Spain, will be able to drive for a period of six months without taking a spanish driving test!
The driving licence agreement, to enable UK licence holders resident in Spain to exchange their licences for a Spanish one without taking a driving test, has been approved by Spain’s Consejo de Ministros. We expect affected UK licence holders to be able to drive again from Thursday, once notes have been exchanged between governments.
For those entering Spain or acquiring residence in Spain subsequently, the period of validity of their UK licence of six months from the date of entry or from the date of obtaining residence will continue to apply.
From this date, the exchange of these driving licences can also be requested, as the Agreement between Spain and the United Kingdom on the reciprocal recognition and exchange of national driving licences and on the exchange of information on traffic offences in the field of road safety, with regard to the reciprocal recognition and exchange of driving licences, is provisionally applicable.
